Achieving success as a musician-entrepreneur is challenging enough under normal circumstances. But when you are apprehensive about achieving that success in the first place? That can make things particularly tough.

Fear of success is a real thing, and succumbing to it can hold you back from becoming the best version of yourself. A critical step in overcoming this fear is determining its source. Why do you feel this way? Is it because you are afraid of having something to lose? Are you scared of the added responsibilities that come with success? Are you afraid of losing a simple life? Of gaining critics or enemies? Do you simply just fear the unknown?

It would be good for you to speak with a therapist or coach to help you get to the core of this fear—and the sooner the better. Fear of success can cause you to subconsciously (or even consciously) sabotage yourself as to try to achieve big things.

Something else that you want to make sure you do is to give some thought to why you want to be successful and what you want to achieve. Be specific on those two fronts. By identifying the source of your passion, you will motivate yourself to achieve success, which will help you overcome your fear. And by setting clear goals for you what want to achieve, you will make that success more of known quantity, and it will look a little less scary to you.

Most importantly: Believe in yourself. Have faith that you will be able to manage that success once you have it. You don’t have all of the answers now, and that’s ok. No one does! Just trust in yourself that you will be able to handle things when the time comes.

Success: the accomplishment of an aim or purpose.

Fearing success is a lot more common than one may think, in my personal opinion.

Personally, I believe that a fear of success really boils down to a fear of having to handle heavier or more stressful loads in the near future.

As succeeding at something is never the true end of the road, whatever is to follow will surely present a whole new set of contexts, challenges, learning experiences, and chances to slip up.

When succeeding means stepping up the ladder into the unknown, where more may expected of you and it may take more energy to score a point along the way, “success” can be a stressful thought to hover around.

My suggestion would be to work to become more aware of the moments you’re currently experiencing, and to understand that you’re winning little battles and making little positive choices the entirety of your journey.

Creating worry and anxiety through excessive contemplation of “what if” will distract you from accomplishing what’s next on your to-do list!

An easy way to start combatting this is to break down your daily work needs into small, achievable tasks. Start with the easiest to complete, and use the swell of energy and positivity from getting the first work checked off your list to roll into your next action. You’ll be on your way in no time!
