Different DAWs (digital audio workstations) can all ultimately perform almost the same functions as each other.
Ableton logic, pro-tools, cubase and fruity loops all record audio, midi and have the ability to manipulate and mix these components together.
The good news is they are all great programs more than capable of making a professional sounding recording in the right hands.
The main difference between them is really workflow, some focus a little more on midi and some on audio so although you could ultimately make any music on any of them logic and Ableton might be better suited to a heavy midi workflow whereas pro-tools is still the leader when it comes to recording and editing audio material with high track counts.
Another difference is that some of these programs are platform specific. Fruity loops only works on PCs and Logic only works on Macs.
If you’re unsure which is right for you, you can demo all the main programs free for a few weeks and ask around, find out what other people working in your genre use.
