Music producer is a very interesting position which is very hard to define.
The contribution of a music producer can be manifold. There are music producers who are quite hands on and get involved with the technical side of the song production whereas there are some who work on a very supervisory or on a conceptual level.
Therefore, it will be important to establish the producer's rights on the song before deciding on taking membership of PRS and/or MCPS. It boils down to what the producer can negotiate with the writers of the song.
However, it will still be a good idea to be member of all the three societies because of the following:
PRS - As a producer it is possible to negotiate writing share on a song, therefore it will be important to be a PRS member to receive the royalties.
MCPS - In the same situation as above if the producer is not published, there may be a mechanical royalty which can be collected via MCPS membership.
As a music producer one must be a member of PPL.
PPL - In PPL they recognise the contribution of a music producer, therefore it will be vital to be a member of PPL in order to receive royalties generated from sound recording.
